About Windermere - Windermere, at 10.5 miles long, one mile wide and 220 feet deep, is the largest natural lake in England, and is fed by numerous rivers. The Romans built their fort of GALAVA at its northern end (Waterhead), and it has always been an important waterway for movement of heavy materials. good hour or so wandering from stall to stall bartering to get the right price. Things to do - You can hire a boat and spend a leisurely few hours on the lake or visit the Beatrix Potter Attraction. Or you could take one of the Lake Cruises from the pier in Bowness and visit Ambleside or Lakeside. At Lakeside you can venture a little further and travel on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway. Or you could take a look around the Aquarium of the Lakes.
