About Wells - The City of Wells - technically, the presence of a cathedral makes a town into a city, so that qualifies this quiet Somerset backwater of Wells a city. Yet thinking of Wells as a city is misleading as it is really a small town but this beautiful home of the Bishops of Bath and Wells is the smallest city in England. Shopping - There are a host of local stores catering for a diverse range of products including many independent specialist shops as well as a mix of popular national outlets. There is also an excellent choice of food and drink establishments to suit all tastes. A twice weekly traditional market, which always creates a special atmosphere, is held in the picturesque Market Place.
