About Watford - Watford is a major regional centre for the northern home counties. It is the most westerly of these commercial centres and the only one in Hertfordshire. Situated 19 miles (30 km) northwest of London and within the bounds of the M25 motorway. The borough lies just to the north of Greater London. The phrase "North of Watford" is used in a light-hearted, yet derogatory sense-typically by those living in the south of England-to describe any part of the United Kingdom situated more than a relatively short distance North of London. Shopping - The main shopping area the Harlequin Shopping Centre has more than 140 stores and all the big high-street names.

Hassled parents take note - the Harlequin runs a supervised playgroup for kids aged three to eight. One end of the Harlequin is Charter Place inside which is Watford Market. It sells fruit, vegetables, jewellery, clothes and gifts. Things to do - The Edwardian Palace Theatre on Clarendon Road, is a respected fringe theatre which presents nine productions annually, many of which transfer to the West End, while Jongleurs welcomes the best from London's thriving stand-up scene. There is a Vue cinema and a bowling alley in the Woodside Leisure Park in Garston (a five-minute car ride from the city centre). For days out with children see: www.kidsdaysout.co.uk/
