0Skipton information, shopping and things to do...

About Skipton - The origins of the market town of Skipton go back to more than a thousand years, it is recorded in the domesday book. Skipton is part of the Leeds Liverpool canal system which is the longest inland waterway at 127 miles long. In 1773 the section from Skipton to Bingley was opened and in 1816 the Leeds to Liverpool network was completed.
Shopping - Skipton Market takes place on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday on the Market Setts, either side of the High Street. Trading takes place from 9am to 4pm on these days, with 58 individual Traders selling everything from fresh fruit, veg and fish to clothing and household goods.

Things to do - Skipton castle is well worth a visit. It's history can be traced back to about 1090 when Robert de Romille built a timber fort on the site. This was replaced with a stone castle, in 1310 the Clifford family were given the property by Edward II. There is a free guide which explains the best way to explore the castle, it also means you follow a route in the same direction which is helpful as some of the passageways are narrow.
