0Dorking information, shopping and things to do...

About Dorking - A visit to the market town of Dorking and to the surrounding Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a special experience. The town nestles in the narrow valley between the Greensand Hills to the south and the chalk hills of the North Downs.
Shopping - West Street is a must if antiques interest you. It has over 150 specialist antique dealers in 18 shops selling a diverse range of items from medieval to modern day, including furniture, porcelain, clocks, textiles, prints, paintings, urns, armoury and guns. The fashion boutique stocks a number of top names including Margaret Howell, Vivienne Westwood and Nicole Farhi with accessories to suit.

Things to do - The Dorking Caves are well worth a visit. All of the caves are man-made, although the initial reason for constructing them and their age is part of their enigmatic character. As for their use, it seems that the caves were quite likely to have been used by smugglers. Dorking was conveniently located between the south coast and London and entrances to the caves were well hidden. One cave in High Street is known to have provided a venue for cock fighting. Others may have been used as a hiding hole during periods of religious persecution.
